About Me:Hi I’m Nadege and I study French at the University of Leeds, and I have just completed my third year abroad in Montpellier studying literature and enjoying the sunshine! I love art; painting and being creative, as well as photography and baking. Travelling is my favourite hobby at the moment; experiencing the French language and culture. I hope you enjoy reading some of my articles!
Located on the Mediterranean coast, on the border between France and Spain, Cerbère is a true treasure waiting to be found. As it is located in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of France, the small village is surrounded by mountains, yet it boasts a stunning beach with blue clear waters where you are able to sunbathe and enjoy the tranquility. The best of both worlds; Cerbère is perfect for an adventure as you can hike up the mountains or take a relaxing stroll through the small and beautiful village.
The village itself is even smaller than I imagined, and the restaurants and amenities are built into the houses. With roughly four or five restaurants, one tourist shop, a supermarket, a pharmacy, a bank and a hairdressers the community is very tight-knit. Everybody knows one another which highlights the fact that this village is unknown to tourists, therefore you can enjoy the beauty and charm of this village without the bother of many other people. Cerbère is known by undersea divers as diving is the main attraction to the village.
You may want to also stop off at the other stations along the railway line before getting to Cerbère, as there are many coastal towns which look as beautiful as Cerbère, with rocky cliffs and small sandy beaches. I feel as though Cerbère is not big enough to spend the entire day here, or any more than a day, because you can easily walk round the whole of Cerbère in around half an hour. Additionally, when I visited on a Saturday, the supermarket – where I wanted to buy lunch, closed for lunch until 16:30! Also, there was only one restaurant which would serve food before 19:00, so you may want to bring your own snacks!
Cerbère would be such a lovely and serene place to live, as the apartments are beautiful, and have stunning views overlooking the Mediterranean sea. There are a couple hotels you are able to stay in, which are built on the cliffs, and these would have the best views as they are located as close to the edge of the cliffs as possible! Cerbère also has a very small harbour, and the Gare de Cerbère (the station) is used often for transfers between France and Spain with Port Bou station being the next station, located in Spain.
Cerbère is a picturesque and quaint village, which is truly breath-taking as you can see from the pictures. I cannot believe that even to French people, Cerbère is unheard of, because it is such a stunning destination!
